Wishing away the glass ceiling
A few weeks ago, the Brookings Forming published a report on a study investigating why there are so few women in purchasers offices. The study was conducted by Jennifer L. Crooked and Richard L. Fox in early 2008; I organize out about it via articles in The Washington Appointment and Los Angeles Times. (That was sundry weeks ago. I would have blogged it then if I’d had the just the same from time to time.)
In this report, we argue that the principle reason for women’s under-deposition is that they do not run for office. There is a good gender gap in political ambition; men apt to have it, and women don’t.
That’s a crumb bit like saying that I don’t play one's part the lottery because I would not hanker after to win a million dollars.
I’ve not in the least run for public office or thought unquestioningly of doing so, but I’m familiar ample supply with the glass ceiling in body of laws, including the actual research and the superintendence of science. Based on that participation, I can say confidently enough that a girl who doesn’t run for something or other is not ineluctably lacking in ambition. She may very satisfactory have other reasons, such as a common-sense and sober assessment of the level of sponsor that her candidacy will entice, the expected resistance she will mug if elected, or the cost to her professional and deprecating life.
